Chapter Thirteen
Lia
“It was one kiss, Mom,” I said, exasperated. “We were in the ice arena parking lot in the middle of the day. It wasn’t like anything was going to happen.” Mom ended up working a sixteen-hour shift on Saturday thanks to someone calling in sick, so Uncle Adam had just filled her in this morning. Now she was reaming me out at our kitchen counter.
“Yes, and thank you for that, but the fact is that you were out with a boy without telling anyone. You rode in the car with someone we’ve never met—”
“Because my car was dead!”
“What if he was a terrible driver? What if he’d gotten in an accident?”
“Then you would have taken good care of me at the hospital.”
Mom took a sip of her coffee and narrowed her eyebrows at me. “Not funny. Look, I’m not thrilled about this, okay? Pierce Miller is…he’s in the public eye. He’s had to grow up a lot faster than most kids your age.”
“I’m not a kid anymore, either.” I tossed my phone from one hand to the other, waiting for a message notification from the NTDP forum.
Mom sighed. “You’re right. You’re not. But you have to tell someone if you’re going somewhere with someone I don’t know. Tell me, tell Uncle Drew, tell someone. And no being alone with him somewhere that isn’t public, okay? He’s a boy. He has hormones. He has…needs.”
I almost gagged to hear Mom talking about “needs.” “Okay, fine, but can we please be done with this conversation?” My phone chimed and I jumped.
“What’s that?” Mom asked.
“Nothing,” I said quickly.
“Is it Pierce? If it’s nothing, let me see.”
I almost groaned. Mom had a “hand over the cell phone, no questions asked” rule that would result in confiscation if broken. But Mom couldn’t see that I was talking to Pierce online. That would open a whole new can of worms. I had to change the subject…
“Kat wants me to skate at the senior level,” I blurted out.
Mom paused, hand halfway out to grab my phone. “What?”
I’d been meaning to talk to her about this but kept putting it off, mostly because I was terrified and didn’t want to think about it, but also because Pierce was a fantastic distraction. But if there was one thing that could get her mind off the boy conversation, this was it.
“She told me to talk to you about it. She thinks I’m ready. Wants me to take a test on the eighteenth in Ohio so I can change my registration for regionals to senior level.”
Mom let her hand drop. Mission accomplished. “Wow. Honey, that’s huge. How do you feel about that?”
I shrugged. While this was a fantastic conversation changer, that didn’t mean I actually wanted to talk about it. “I don’t know. Nervous, I guess.”
“What part are you nervous about?”
“That I won’t pass the test.”
“If you don’t pass the test, then you just compete at the junior level like you already planned. That’s no big deal.”
She was right. The big deal was the part I didn’t want to talk about.
